Announcement:
The Extra Action Marching Band, a 30 member musical performance group
from Oakland/San Francisco will be playing at [whatever venue] on
[whatever date.] Composed of a drum squad, horn section and flag
team, this group has played together for nine years and has toured the
US, Canada, and Europe.
About the Band:
The Extra Action Marching Band is a collision of big band and ecstatic
turmoil. Despite their name they rarely march, but rather shimmy,
crawl, mob and charge. Trumpets pounce like eagles and tubas drip
ass-bouncing blurps from fat fingers. Drums shudder under wild eyed
and white knuckled drummers, and through it all winds the flag team;
glittering and sinuous creatures who masterfully pulsate pom-poms in a
hypnotic fantasy. The listener is hoodwinked, soaked, and savaged
into giddy abandon.
Powerful and empowering, the Extra Action Marching Band seduces the
pre-civilized will. They are immediate and visceral - more of a
sweaty invitation than a show. They are a parody of idioms with
shattering volume - guerrilla theater with the rug rolled up. Extra
Action has performed in back alleys and at the Hollywood Bowl, they
have played Black Sabbath in a synagogue for dancing octagenarians -
but the preferred venue is a small locked room with the heat turned
up.
As the sound boils into a spinning crossfire, sweat and flying hair
tangle in a delicious knot. The flag team slips above and below the
gender script and an underground river of honey is unleashed.
Audience and band submit together, to each other, to the whim and
fancy, to satisfaction. Irresistible.
Previous Shows:
Extra Action has played with David Byrne, Arcade Fire, Rebirth Brass
Band, Crash Worship, Modest Mouse, the Master Musicians of Jajouka,
Ween, the Killers, Boban Markovich, John Prine, Extreme Elvis, MDC,
the Yard Dogs, and Bjork. They have performed at such venues as the
Hollywood Bowl, Spiegeltent, a carwash on Melrose Avenue, the
Fillmore, the Knitting Factory, Guca (a Roma brass festival in
Serbia), La Contessa, a treehouse, Shoreline Amphitheatre, Motorship
Stubnitz, Gay Pride parade and numerous anti-war protests.
Press Quotes:
"Witness them perform and they don't so much walk on stage as storm it
. . .Their music has been described as a fusion of Balkan brass and
New Orleans funk, which references circus themes and Black Sabbath's
first album." -Corina Zappia, DAZED AND CONFUSED (UK)
"When they marched onto stage at the Shoreline Amphitheatre to join
Arcade Fire (after crashing the women's room) at last year's Download
Festival - ragtag horn and drum corps ripping through a few numbers as
the flag girls and boys bumped and grinded in blond wigs and glittery
G-strings - you realized what was really missing from indie at this
performance, at so many performances: sex appeal. Theater. A drunken
mastery of performance and the dark arts of showmanship, along with
the sense of team spirit linked to so much marching band imagery
bandied about in today's pop." - Kimberly Chun, SF BAY GUARDIAN (US)
